It is the 31st May 2024 and winter has arrived in South Africa. The cooler weather is becoming more regular and in many parts of the country, cold fronts and rain are starting to become the normal, however, St Lucia Estuary has a subtropical climate and winter here is one of the best times of the year to visit.
Winter is the dry season in St Lucia Estuary and daytime temperatures can reach as high at 24 degrees Celcius with averages of about 17-18 degrees Celcius. The evenings are cool and the days are clear and dry with blue skies.
In addition to the great winter climate, June, July and August are excellent months for game viewing. The grasses tend to be shorter and the trees and bushes less dense than during the rainy, wet season of the summer, so it is often much easier to spot game during the winter months.
Make sure you bring warm clothes to wear on the game viewers, and dress in layers so that as the sun rises in the sky and the temperatures during the day warm up, you can adjust accordingly.
